"Never was a dead poet so famous for a single song, or so honored."--Harper's New Monthly Magazine reporting on the burial of John Howard Payne in Washington D.C. more than 30 years after his death in North Africa where he served as the United States Consul. Several thousand people had paid their respects while his body lay in state in the City Hall of New York City. Thousands more attended his funeral several days later. As a measure of his fame in the 19th century it should be noted that this occurred almost 60 years after the song was first performed.
