About This Item
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1882. [5],217pp. plus one-page advertisement. 12mo. Original decorative cloth, stamped in black, terra cotta, and gilt. Spine slightly faded; head of spine lightly chipped; very good. First American edition; originally published in London in the same year. Chapters are titled as follows: "The Lesser Arts...The Art of the People...The Beauty of Life...Making the Best of It...The Prospects of Architecture in Civilization." Morris's social and moral demands for a reform of the household arts was felt deeply in America - the Craftsman Movement of Gustav Stickley and Elbert Hubbard stems directly from this. Hitchcock has declared Morris's criticism to have been as influential on later architecture as Ruskin or Viollet-le-Duc; he was equally, if not more, important in the decorative arts, especially through the work of his firm, William Morris & Co. The publisher's binding is a handsome example of Aesthetic Movement design. HITCHCOCK 801.
