A nicely bound complete three volume set of John Brown's popular essays on history, biography, and art, including his best known short story 'Rab and His Friends'. Complete in three volumes. A collection of essays and papers, discussing art, medical history, and biography. The work includes two of Brown's most popular works, 'Rab and His Friends', and 'Marjorie Fleming'. 'Marjorie Fleming' iis a essay on the ten year old prodigy of Walter Scott. 'Rab and His Friends' is a short story, following Rab, a huge mastiff dog. It was a very popular short story in the nineteenth century. Illustrated with a frontispiece to volumes I and III. Written by John Brown, who is best known for this work. He was a Scottish physician and essayist. Bookplate to the front pastedowns 'Herbert S. Squance'. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Fading to the spines. Light marks and rubbing to the boards and spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots, mostly to the first and last few pages.
