About This Item

Toronto: Dundurn, 1993. 112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toronto and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang up across the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toronto Archives, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary change. The century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the studio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, two small soft corner creases.. Soft Cover. Very Good+. Illus. by William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Gross & Frank W. Micklethwaite, photographs..
