Hours of exercise in the Alps - 1899

by TYNDALL, John

  • Used

Description

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1899. With frontispiece and 6 plates. Original maroon cloth, decorated in blind; some faint wear to lower cover. Fourth edition of this account of mountaineering in the Alps. First published in 1871, this work outlines Tyndall's various expeditions in Switzerland, including his ascents of the Matterhorn, the Jungfrau, and the Weisshorn, of which he was the first person to accomplish. Published posthumously, this edition was edited by Tyndall's widow, who added an index as well as some very slight textual changes. Tyndall (1820-93) was an Irish naturalist, physicist, mathematician and mountaineer as well as a professor of natural history at the Royal Institution. Tyndall went to Switzerland to study glaciers, and co-wrote On the structure and motion of glaciers with T.H. Huxley. Along with Huxley and Darwin, Tyndall was instrumental in helping the public to accept a modern, scientific approach. BMC, XXV, 956.
