About This Item

HAMILTON, Virginia. The House of Dies Drear. Illustrations by Eros Keith. NY: Macmillan [1968]. 8vo, [vi] 247pp. Dark purple cloth stamped in gold. 5 one-page and one two-page b&w illustrations. Spine ends and corners slightly rubbed, else a clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (some chips and tears, but printed matter mostly unaffected). Signed by the author, Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton.

First edition. The Edgar Award-winning novel is the first in the two book Dies Drear Chronicles. Thomas knew the house held secrets even before he first saw it looming gray and massive on its ledge of rock. It had a century-old legend – two fugitive slaves had been killed by bounty hunters after leaving its passageways, and Dies Drear himself, the abolitionist who had made the house into a station on the Underground Railroad, had been murdered there. The ghosts of the three were said to walk its rooms. Thomas sensed there was danger, but could he discover the truth?
