EDWARD L. AYERS, Ph.D., is the Hugh P. Kelly Professor of History at the University of Virginia. He is an award-winning author whose previous works include The Promise of the New South: Life After Reconstruction, The Oxford Book of the American South (coedited by Bradley M. Mittendorf), and The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War. Professor Ayers has been a finalist for both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in history.
