San Francisco: A. M. Robertson. Good. 1911. First Edition. Hardcover. First issue (Johnson p. 9); Inscribed by Sterling broadly on front endpaper, "For Miss Anna Holden with happy memories, George Sterling, San Francisco, Aug. 7th, 1919." 140 pp.; 8vo; purple cloth with ornamental design in silver, spine lettered in silver. Spine cloth a little rubbed and toned; endpapers and front pastedown browned; offset browning to pages 66 & 67 as from newspring once laid in. George Sterling (1869-1926), born in Sag Harbor, N.Y., Puritan stock pegged for the priesthood, fell for poetry in school, washed up in Oakland with a sinecure in his uncle's real estate office. Still smitten by verse, he met Ambrose Bierce, among other literary lights, who became his mentor. And so the bohemian life everafter in The Grove, at Carmel, and his Cool, Grey City of Love, in a romantic pursuit of the visionary and the mystical, mainly in sonnets. House of Orchids was his third book of poetry, .
