Unusual title for the Sendak collector, this is the second children's book by Newberry-award winning author M. DeJong. It is about a Chinese boy on his family's sampan during the Japanese occupation, when his boat breaks loose from its moorings & he is set adrift at sea, eventually landing with only his beloved pig on enemy territory, & his struggle to make his way home to his family Illustrator Maurice Sendak's "expressive pictures have caught the essence of Tien Pao & his faith, courage & unwillingness to surrender his belief in the impossible." A FIRST EDITION, printing from 1956, this hardcover 8vo book is an Ex-Lib copy, but in VG+ condition & unusually clean & bright. Only signs are stamps in front matter & glue residue to front endpapers. Else, very clean & bright, binding is straight & strong, pages creamy white with just a hint of tanning, else unmarked except for some pen scratching in letters on half-title page.
