Working-class life in Chicago gets a gritty, hardboiled treatment from the author of the Studs Lonigan trilogy, who here focuses on the travails of the title character, a dispatcher for the Continental Express Company.

The author's first book, an antiwar novel based on the abortive 1917 rebellion (called the Green Corn Rebellion in the War Department archives) of Oklahoma farmers who plotted to rebel against the draft and America's entrance into the First World War, and to march on Washington and form a cooperative commonwealth, and the tragic consequences to those who participated in it. Cunningham was a major influence on his protégé and friend at the Oklahoma Writer's Project, Jim Thompson. Thompson's admiration for this novel and friendship with Cunningham precipitated his being hired at the Project, where he succeeded Cunningham as Director. First printing with 1931 date on title page and 1930 date on copyright page. A solid clean very good copy in a good plus price intact dustwrapper with chipping to edges and fairly heavy creases to rear panel. Quite scarce in any dustwrapper.

There was quite a stir & Greene literally took off to Mexico at the time to avoid a potential libel action. As a consequence to Greene collectors, the UK 1st book is as rare as the rarest of Greene titles, especially in any sort of dustwrapper. After Routledge withdrew the book & pulped the run, it was published in Paris, June, 1938 by Jack Kahane, father of Maurice Girodias. Another edition was published in London in 1954. This is the true first US 1938 edition & very scarce in its own right & not often seen in dustwrapper.
