NY: Knopf, 1983. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Near Fine. 8vo. 919pp. First Edition. Signed and dated by Updike on the front free end paper. VG/NF. Bound in full blue cloth with gilt and silver spine titles and a grey topstain. Softening to spine ends, light off-setting to interior gutters, some quite light foxing to the deckled fore-edge of textblock. In a near fine, price-clipped, lightly age-toned dust jacket. Updike's first collection of essays and criticism.
Synopsis
John Updike was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania, in 1932. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in Oxford, England, at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art. From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of The New Yorker . His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Rosenthal Foundation Award, and the William Dean Howells Medal. In 2007 he received the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John Updike died in January 2009.

Unless otherwise requested, expedited domestic purchases ship via USPS Priority Mail; overseas orders via USPS First Class International. Heavy or oversized books may incur additional shipping charges, as may books shipped to overseas destinations. Any additional charges required will be communicated promptly.
We take safe shipping very seriously; all of our books are packaged in new cardboard boxes amply cushioned with biodegradable packing peanuts. Pamphlets and other flat materials items are ocassionally shipped in bubble-mailers with internal cardboard supports. All books with dust jackets are fitted with brand new archival protectors prior to shipping.
