The Snails is a short story by Patricia Highsmith (author of The Talented Mr. Ripley) about giant snails with huge teeth that inhabit a remote island. When an out-of-shape professor decides to visit the island in hopes of capturing one of the snails in order to secure fame for himself, his plans go awry. A seemingly peculiar topic for a story, it was perfect for Highsmith who kept snails as pets and was known to take them to parties on leaves of lettuce in her handbag. The book is housed in a brick red cloth box with a cast-paper sculpture of a snail shell to the top cover. The book is bound in tan cloth with an illustration of a snail pasted down to the front cover. Within the folds of the accordion structure binding are smaller gatherings of pages, which include the text. Scarce with author's signature to half-title page. In light blue debossed cloth boards with darker blue cloth spine and silver type. top page ends tinted light blue. Unfortunately, to combat pigment/paper loss common to boards of this edition, a previous owner painted boards blue(but not spine). Some light loss still visible to board ends and corners. Light wear overall with sharp corners. A tiny blue spot to bottom page ends and some very faint smudges to endpapers and paper abrasions to pastedowns. Otherwise clean with tight binding. Would be Very Good if not for aforementioned coloration of boards. Jacket price is price-clipped with some very small chips primarily to top corners, head of spine and top of panels. Crease to front flap with smaler edge crease, some scuffing and spotting to top of rear flap.

Boards and spine in very good condition with no obvious defects. A couple of the pages have very small creases to the corners, and the top edge of the book has an orange mark across the top of the pages (only visible when the book is closed). Pages are otherwise very clean and bright, excellent condition for age. Jacket bright and colourful, with very slight fading to spine (author's name is faint) with some very minor scuffing and raising to edges and a small closed tear to the front. Not price clipped. Generally a good, collectable example.
