SIGNED JUSTICE R on the front free end page and thus signed by author Rayne; as Dictrict Commissioner, Rayne was directly responsible to the governor for the administration of justice (divorce, marriage, thievery, homicide) in Ziala District, a region in the north-west of then British Somalia.  This is the first edition of a scarce book that gives an insight into colonial administration in British Somalia early 1900s. Book finishes with an account of author's dealings with the Mad Mullah (1919). That Was the first occasion on which the RAF was used for colonial policing. Group Captain Gordon led a squadron of twelve De Havilland DH9s, transported on HMS Ark Royal.  Book is in GOOD plus condition with 12 plates. The frontispiece is tissue-protected. Note rubbing on spine.

HATFIELD BOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, a FIVE STAR SELLER, presents a VERY RARE ASSOCIATION COPY of the 1828 collection of historical Scottish prose and verse, JACOBITE MINSTRELSY. Though yet unverified, the early owner, signed Edward Sugden, is presumably EDWARD SUGDEN, First Baron of St. Leonards, Lord Chancellor of Ireland under both King William IV and Queen Victoria, and (for one year only) Lord Chancellor of Great Britain under Queen Victoria. 1828 is the stated publishing date, while 1829 appears in Roman numerals on title page, making this a very early printing. 3 1/4" x 5 1/4", 362 pages, plus 8 pages of index. No jacket as designed. Cover is marbled grey and brown boards with ¼ bound brown cloth, including at corners, titled in gold gilt on the binding. The front cover is separated, making the overall condition Very Good rather than Near Fine. A note follows the final printed page: "Robert Malcolm, printer." PLAN, SECTION and ELEVATION of the POO-TA-LA of TEMPLE of the LAMA at ZHE-HOL in TARTARYThis monumental temple which looks more like a fortified tower was drawn by HW Parish in 1793.This antique original copper plate engraving is from Sir George Leonard Staunton's atlas folio of prints to accompany "An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China . Taken chiefly from the papers of His Excellency the Earl of Macartney". The work was published in London by G.Nicol in 1797. George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney (1737-1806) was dispatched to Beijing in 1792 travelling via Madeira, Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope and Indonesia. He was accompanied by George Staunton, and a retinue of suitably impressive size, including Stauntonâ s 11-year-old son who was nominally the ambassadorâ s page. Edges a bit rubbed and bumped and small amount of chipping to the edges of the label, not affecting the lettering, but generally a very good copy.
