Mattioli translated and commented on the work of Greek physician, pharmacologist, and botanist, Dioscorides updating the edition with new medical plants and numerous detailed woodcuts. "The plant is reported to be used in asthma. The leaves are expectorant, employed as an emollient fomentation in rheumatism and neuralgia. The leaves and tender shoot are used in snake bite. Pietro Andrea Mattioli "(durch Corruption Matthiolus genannt), als Sohn eines Arztes 23. März 1500 geb., promovirte in Padua, prakticirte eine Zeit lang Vaterstadt, dann unter dem Pontificat Leo's X. in Rom bis 1527, hieranf in Folge der Kriegsunruhen im Valle Anania im Trientinischen, wo bis 1540 blieb, um dann nach Görz und 1552 als Arzt des Erzherzogs Ferdinand nach Prag überzusiedeln, wo er Hofrath und später erster Arzt des Kaisers Maximillian II. wurde. Schliesslich gab er in Folge von Altersschwäche diese Stellung auf und zog sich nach Trient zurück, wo er 1577 au der Pest starb. - Mattioli war ein gelehrter und besonders durch seine Kenntnisse in der Botanik hervorragender Arzt, dabei ein begeisterter Verehrer des Celsus. [Prague, Melantrich von Aventin, 1561?]. Single leaf, 8vo-sized (20.0 x 15.1 cm). Printed on one side. Framed. Frame size 45.6 x 43.1 cm. = A nicely engraved portrait of the important pre-Linnean Italian botanist Pietro Mattioli or Matthioli (1500?-1577), with the text "Nec igne nec ferro". The portrait possibly comes from the author's "Epistolarum Medicinalium libri quinque". Mattioli was a physician of Ferdinand of Tyrol in Prague from 1554 onward, and this work contained several medical discoveries. The artist, Melantrich, made a new device, stating, in Latin, "neither by fire nor by iron". Cut short, without margins. Otherwise good, clean.

One leaf of early manuscript notes laid in. Two parts bound together in one volume. The first part missing significant portion of preliminaries, then thre remaingin first part is whole from 1-817. Second part (“Sixth Book”, with separate title page, missing two leaves at the end. This is the third edition of the revised and enlarged text of Mattioli’s famous commentary on Dioscorides, first published in Venice in 1544.
