Cleveland: The Burrows Brothers Co., 1899. 8vo (245mm x 165), blue cloth over boards, 175 pp., frontis. No. 134 of 250 copies. A reprint of the original 1820 edition, only ten copies of which were known at the time of publication. Includes "a Sketch of the Life, the Ichthyologic Work, and the Ichthyologic Bibliography of Rafinesque." Rafinesque's pathbreaking work undertook the first exhaustive scientific inquiry into the fish of the Ohio River-covering their characteristics, nomenclature, and even their susceptibility to falling prey to the angler's hook. Rafinesque was born in Constantinople in 1783 and by 1815 had permanently settled in America, where he became professor of natural history at the Transylvana University during the early 1820s. Before dying in poverty in 1840, he produced numerous works on various scientific subjects, making several notable contributions to the field of botany. "No other American naturalist traveled so widely. He met, at one time or another, most of the scientists of note in the United States and was on friendly terms with them. He wrote and published incessantly, as he had done ever since his residence in Sicily. Many of his publications are excessively rare, for his method of publishing was as eccentric and irregular as his other habits. Botany and ichthyology continued to be his chief interests, but he wrote also on banking , economics, the Bible, and other topics, and even produced a few volumes of verse. His descriptions of plants and fishes are often vague or inaccurate, and he had a passion for announcing new species. Behind this passion lay the conviction, expressed more than once in his writings, that 'every variety is a deviation which becomes a species as soon as it is permanent by reproduction. Deviations in essential organs may then gradually become new genera.' He thus had a glimpse, if no more than a glimpse, of the later development of biological thought."-Dictionary of American Biography. CONDITION: Good, rubbed, head of spine chipped, old tape marks at fore-edges of covers, front hinge cracked but holding firm.
