About This Item

Richmond, VA: Adon A. Yoder, 1911. Original Wrappers. Good binding. THE IDEA, edited by Richmond's muckraking socialist writer, Adon Yoder, quite uncommon, and consisting of "Sermonettes Published Weekly for The Common Good". Yoder indeed raked the muck of Richmond, taking on the saloons, the red-light districts, the police, and the City Fathers. No one was safe from his caustic pen, and he agitated plenty, ultimately ending up in jail for his efforts.~From Christian's History of Richmond: "Adon A. Yoder came to the city and began the publication of a weekly pamphlet called THE IDEA. He wielded a caustic pen, and began a criticism o many of the city officials, charging them with the responsibility of abuses that existed in the city. Several bought suit against Yoder and his publisher and obtained a judgment. He was also charged with libel, and not being able to prove his statements, he was convicted and punished. With the exception of reconstruction, this is the second time a writer has been sent to jail in Richmond..." (p. 521). See Harry Kollatz' RICHMOND AND RAGTIME, for extensive recounting of some of Yoder's exploits in the fair City of Richmond in the early years of the last century. This copy creased from being folding in half, and reinforced with paper tape at the spine. Good binding.
