Dresden: Vitus-Verlag 1923-1924, 1923. Two volumes, both first edition. Erster Band: pp48. Two page introduction with two photographs incorporated followed by twenty plates with a mixture of black and white and sepia photographs of the nude. Bound in illustrated paper covered boards, red linen spine. Bumping to extremities and marking to the covers but overall in very good condition. The contents are in near fine condition with only modest foxing and browning to the white borders of the photographs. Zweiter Band: pp48. Two page introduction with one photograph incorporated followed by twenty plates with a mixture of black and white and sepia photographs of the nude. Bound in illustrated paper covered boards, red linen spine. Very slight bumping to corners, otherwise near fine. The contents are in excellent, fine condition with particularly clean and fresh plates. Magnus Weidemann is a curious figure. He was an artist, a pastor and one of the founders of the Freikörperkultur (FKK) which encouraged a shame-free attitude towards public nudity and the naked body. Many of the leading the photographers of the movement during its Weimar Republic heyday are represented here including Franz Fiedler and Lotte Herrlich. Suppressed by the National Socialists, the movement was revived after WWII with the founding of the Deutscher Verband für Freikörperkultur (DFK) and social nudity and naturism remains an important element of German popular culture.
