Covers rubbed at the extremities with light chipping to the spine ends, old stains to upper corner of rear cover and upper left corner of spine, contents not affected, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages, engraving of George Washington mounted inside the front cover, letter I and number 57 written on front free endpaper, no other markings.. Hardcover, no dustjacket, brown cloth, a very attractive copy of this "Student's Edition," illustrated with a fold-out map and includes a Pronouncing Vocabulary of Proper Names, the following minor flaws are present: softening to the top edge of the spine and mild rubbing to the cover, the binding is clean and tight and the contents are fine .

Both inner hinges of Vol. 2 are like this, as well. Solid tight and clean. Green publishers cloth with beveled edges, simple gilt title on front covers and spine. 2 volumes. Vol. 1:xviii, 398 pp. Vol 2: vi, pp. 1-426. No illustrations. A very attractive set, made all the btter by the autographed note from Bryant to a Mr. Phelps from 1851, complying with a request for aan autograph.
