London: Chatto and Windus, 1876. 264pgs.Color frontispiece. Contains 114 Chromolithographs on 76 sheets.(including foldout map) Volume One Only. Red Cloth with gil lettering, Indians and Horses vignette on front panel. Faded decorated spine with black and red letterng. It appears that the volume has been expertly rebound retaining the original cloth and spine, and the endpapers have been replaced. There is a stain on the upper left edge of the rear panel. Otherwise the internals show light toning, the plates are in excellent condition. A wonderful example of Native American life from an eyewitness from 1830 to 1836. This is the First Edition with the color plates.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-. 6 1/8" x 10 1/8".

George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who specialized in portraits of Native Americans in the American Frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians. His early work included engravings, drawn from nature, of sites along the route of the Erie Canal in New York State.
