First edition, privately printed, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on front free endpaper, with letter explaining the publication history, signed by the author, tipped inside front cover. This is an unedited war diary kept by a medical doctor with the field ambulance during the Turkish campaign and Gallipoli. I am just quoting a random passage which illustrates the immediacy of the text. 'Now again after a pause these guns are firing at their hardest at V. Beach - aye, and here too. August 15th. - I wrote the last clause (aye, and here too) just before a shell burst behind me … Our greatest deficiency is in personnel; we are short of our original number by three officers and thirty-eight men, this being due to casualties and sickness' (pp. 159f.).
