New York/Milwaukee/Chicago: Bruce Publishing Company, 1940. 30 one-page diagrams opposite brief histories of various Native American cultural items and camp conveniences. Hunt, earlier of note for several books on hand-lettering, studied the work of Native American artists, including meeting with several in the 1930s, and began sharing his understanding of it with Milwaukee-area Boy Scout troops, eventually contributing over 1000 articles to Boys' Life, the Scouting magazine. Stated second printing, 1940; first published two tears earlier; revised in 1945. INSCRIBED by Hunt to 'Doc' Bersch in 1941: Elroy A. "Doc" Bersch was long involved in Scouting, becoming Assistant Scout Executive of the Samoset Council of Wausau in central Wisconsin from 1947-1953 and Scout Executive of the Indian Trails Council of Janesville in south-central Wisconsin after 1953. Hardcover in battered jacket, as pictured. Book shows some wear, corners bumped & rubbed, bookplate; jacket rubbed, torn, taped, cockled, written on, chipped, stained, yet substantially intact, $2.25 price remains; endsheets tanned & smudged, light creasing to pages. Born in Chicago in 1909, Lenore Thomas, though she studied at the Chicago Art Institute, was a largely self-taught sculptor, creating large-scale public works for New Deal programs. Living in Maryland in the 1940s, she married Robert Ware Straus; both were involved in social justice issues and Lenore was investigated by HUAC in the 1950s.
