Revised Edition. Hardcover. Printed paper-covered boards with red cloth spine. One of the volumes in the Putnam’s Handy Book Series of Things Worth Knowing. Printed publisher advertisements on endpapers. viii, (9) , 10-119 + [[4]pp publisher’s ads. An uncommon 19th century treatise on nutrition for infants taking for granted that “mother’s milk is the most appropriate food” and that “weaning ought not to take place before the infant and its digestive organs are sufficiently prepared for more complicated nutrition”. The book discusses the gradual introduction of other foods once the first teeth erupt and finishes with a discussion of “the summer complaint” which comes from “overfeeding and hot and foul air”. Dr. Abraham Jacobi wrote the original edition, which was published in 1874, and his wife, Dr. Mary Putnam Jacobi, substantially enlarged and revised it in this 1878 edition. Both authors were pioneering and influential medical doctors, educators, and social reformers. ; Ex-Library; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
