About This Item
New York: Boni and Liveright, 1924. First American edition. Pencil notes on endpaper; near fine in a chipped dust jacket that is complete despite being detached by tear running the length of the front hinge.. 8vo, 414pp, illustrated; maroon cloth. Kammerer's controversial work, offering proof of Lamarck's notion that acquired physical characteristics could be genetically inherited, won the Austrian biologist instant fame as the 'new Darwin.' When confronted with evidence that he had faked his results to arrive at the desired data, Kammerer committed suicide in 1926.
