Blue cloth with gilt titles on front cover along with embossed red rosary and moon and star in silver-light. Light rubbing at extremities. Covers faded and rubbed. Spine and edges have minor bumping, as well as some shelf/edge wear. The inside of Volume I is clean and unmarked except for 2.00 on fly page. Volume II is clean and unmarked except for previous owner's name and "November 1899" written on fly page. 502 pp + 578 pp are yellowed. Binding is good. Lewis Wallace was a general for the Union army during the Civil War. He went on to become governor of the New Mexico Territory out west. Stamped on the title page is,"Specimen Copy with compliments of C. A. Ritter, Auburn, Pa." This was evidently a copy that was given to a school to examine for consideration for class material. Some writing on rear cover and writing erased on first blank page. Some writing, marks, and some closed tears thru book. 192 pages. Binding is starting to loosen. Letters on spine are fading and wearing off.

Octavo; vii, 216pp. In contemporary half leather over green cloth boards (a little rubbed and worn, remnants of early paper label to head of spine), five raised spine bands, gilt lettered leather spine label to second compartment, all page edges marbled, contemporary ink inscription to front blank, early library blind-stamp to first two leaves ('William Todd and Co. Library, Limerick'), light foxing to opening and closing leaves, unobtrusive light paper browning and occasional spots ans stains otherwise internally clean. The title page bears no date but the publisher's address and book's typography place it in the late 1850s to early 1860s. Very good early example of this American novel of the civil war era.
