Numerous illustrations and tipped in reproductions of the artist's work are accompanied with essays by Louis Reau, Clare Sheridan, André Levinson, Claude Farrere and André Antoine.Although Grigoriev left Russia in 1918, the faces of Russian peasants continued to haunt him, and he worked tirelessly on this theme while living in France in the early 1920s. The result is an intense study of the faces of the Russian people; each portrait depicts the peasant in a uniquely harsh light, exposing the hardships of their lives through their rugged faces and… Read More

Description:
Fine example of the first English edition of Grigoriev's celebrated extended cycle of Russian portraits. Limited to 500 copies only, this one num. 7.
Faces of Russia started its life as Grigoriev's initial project, the album titled 'Raseya' (a slang word for peasant Russia), published in Petrograd in 1918. At the time, Grigoriev was already scandalously famous: in 1913 he was expelled from the St Petersburg Art Academy and invited to take part in 'Mir Iskusstva' exhibition; in 1916 he produced one of his iconic paintings – a portrait of Vsevolod Meyerhold. In 'Raseya', he presented harsh, Cubist-style portraits of Russian peasants – a stark contrast to the idealised image of the spiritual Russian peasant popular in the West at the time. However, the album was neither in line with the Bolshevik vision of the Russian peasant class.
In 1919 Grigoriev left Russia and settled in Europe, where he published the 2nd, expanded, edition of 'Raseya': it appeared in Berlin in 1921 in Russian and in 1922 in… Read More

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., 1963. First U.S. edition with scarce wraparound band reading " 'DUTTON EDITION IS SUPERIOR'/ Harrison Salisbury - NEW YORK TIMES." This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.' The prisoners were forbidden ... to call the guards 'comrade' ...." 8vo light gray-green rough cloth boards stamped in green on front and spine; top edge stain… Read More
