Conrad, 1818. xii + 215 pages; illustrated with explanatory botanical engravings and a folding Table of the Classes (of plants) by Priscilla Wakefield (1751 - 1832) British author and philanthropist, who "...wrote expository natural history books that are part of the Enlightenment history of disseminating science to new audiences. An Introduction to Botany (1796) is an account of Linnaean botany in the form of letters between sisters...(her) philanthropic projects gave practical form to ideas that had been circulating in England at that time..." (Ann B. Shteir in the ODNB). Bookplate on front endpaper of the Hallowell Social Library. Approx. 4 1/2" x 7 1/4" size; full polished leather binding, gilt spine title & simple line rules. Some edge, tips wear and rubbing to the covers; spine ends chipped away; occasional spotting & foxing; a few marginal pencil marks. In good condition.. Third American Edition. Leather. Good.
