Description

Hugh Garner (1913-1979) was born in England, but moved with his family to Canada in 1919. His writing was greatly informed by his experiences growing up in the working-class neighbourhood of Cabbagetown in Toronto, Ontario. As a result, and given his support of socialism, his realistic literary works frequently focus on the working-class and the exploitation of the worker. His 1950 novel Cabbagetown perfectly reflects his preferred subject matter. The Intruders may perhaps be understood as a return to Cabbagetown for Garner. Set once again in the Toronto neighbourhood, this time Garner provides an account of the meeting of the work-class residents of Cabbagetown, for many of whom the goal has always been to escape the neighbourhood, with the new middle-class residents who are moving into the neighbourhood. This volume is inscribed by the author, and is in Very Good condition, with some minor wear to the edges of the boards and spine. The dust jacket is present and may also be said to be in Very Good Condition.
