The Invisible Man: A Grotesque Romance; C. Arthur Pearson LTD; London, 1897. FIRST EDITION; FIRST PRINTING; Half-title; title pp in orange and black with p"2" numbering 1st. page, and integral advertisement leaves at end. (A few small stains to a few leaves). Half bound (with rebacking & recorning & endpapers renewed) in gilt-ruled crushed red morocco; original red cloth front/back covers in publisher's red cloth gilt. A handsome copy of a classic horror novel written by a "father of modern horror/sci/fi" H.G. Wells.
Veering from the first person narrative perspective of his previous novels, "The Time Machine" and "The Island of Dr. Moreau", Wells adopts a third-person objective point of view The novel is considered influential for its time, and helped establish Wells as the "father of science fiction"[1]. One of the main inspirations for Wells when writing The Invisible Man was Plato's Republic, which impacted him significantly when he read it as an adolescent. The legend of the "Ring of Gyges", which appears in the second book of the Republic, posits that, if a man were made invisible and could act with impunity, he would "go about among men with the powers of a god."

The Mandrake Press. London. 1929. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (8.8 x 5.8 inches). Some very mild foxing to fore edges and some light offsetting to the endpapers from the dustwrapper but overall a bright, clean and fresh copy in publishers dark green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. In the original colour illustrated dustwrapper with striking designs by Beresford Egan to the panels, spine and rear inner flap. A small area of loss to the very top of the spine, which is a bit toned, and some tiny chips to the extremities but overall a superior and un-restored example of this fabulous wrapper. New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
