From the rear cover

Gissing's early life was one of intense poverty elevated by a sound education. Armed with guidebooks and classical accounts, Gissing made two memorable trips to the Mediterranean: first to Rome and Athens in 1886, and eleven years later to Calabria and the wild Italian coast south of Naples, which resulted in this book.
