1652 1st ed Oliver CROMWELL English Civil War Payne Fisher Irenodia Gratulatoria

Ode to Oliver Cromwell published during his lifetime!

Payne Fisher was a 17th-century English poet who is remembered for his elegies and epitaphs commemorating great English military and political leaders. His most famous is undoubtedly 'Irenodia Gratulatoria' – a poem in which he praises the life and career of Oliver Cromwell. Fisher goes beyond just a basic biography, extending the praises to Cromwell's character and virtues. In fact, Fisher even gives Cromwell "credit for the foundation of the republic". (Norbrook p.234)

1695 1ed FAMED Robert Boyle Against Swearing Cursing Oaths Philosophy Anger RARE

While mostly known for his contributions to natural philosophy and science, Robert Boyle was highly interested in theology, devoting much of his time to studying the existence of God, using his philosophical and even scientific discoveries as evidence. One of his many important treatises was his "Against Swearing and Cursing" – a discussion on the sins of cursing, dealing with anger, agreeing to and breaking oaths, and admissions of guilt.

The 'Printing and the Mind of Man' calls Boyle
"the best-known English scientist of his day, and the greatest experimental scientist of the mid-17th-century." (PMM 141).

Description:
New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
