The expansion of the West into Muslim lands awakened with Muslims a shared sense of subjugation. . . . Then steamer, rail, and telegraph made possible an animated discourse among Muslim centers linked in the past by tenuous ties. From this exchange emerged a loose network of Muslim cosmopolitans, men of common conviction who shared a critique of the West, and a vision of a revitalized Islam.
