About the author

Since 1992 John Davis has held the Emiliana Pasca Noether Chair at the University of Connecticut, previously professor of Modern European History at the University of Warwick where he was Director of the Center for Social History. Professor Davis was awarded the British Academy Serena Medal for Italian studies in 1998, and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 1997. 94509
