Harmondsworth, England: Penguin Books, 19 April 1940. Mass Market Paperback. First printing of the First Penguin Edition, Penguin 257. "Published in Penguin Books 1940"; No additional printings listed. Orange and white card cover with black lettering. Very Good. Prior owner's name and price penciled on first page, otherwise unmarked. Tanned. Spine tight with slight tilt. One inch tear to bottom of front hinge. Reading wear to edges and corners. Laid in with the reading case label containing the author's biography. 224 pages.

Published just seven month's after Great Britain entered World War II and a few weeks after the British government introduced wartime paper rationing. Drover, a Communist bus driver, is in prison, sentenced to death for killing a policeman during a riot at Hyde Park Corner. A battle for a reprieve with many participants ensues: the Assistant Commissioner, high-principled and over-worked; Conrad, a paranoid clerk; Mr Surrogate, a rich Fabian; Condor, a pathetic journalist feeding on fantasies; pretty, promiscuous Kay - all have a part to play in his fate.

Description:
New York: Fight Stories, Inc. / Fiction House, 1932. 128 pages. A single issue of the first single-sport pulp magazine, one focused on the sport of boxing. Fight Stories became the prototype for other sport magazines. The first issue of the pulp were almost entirely fiction, but by 1932 there was a combination of fiction and non-fiction. Contributors are Seaborn Brown / Paschal N. Strong / Art Moore / D. A. Harrison / C. S. Montanye / Merlin Moore Taylor / Jack Kofoed / Jimmy De Forest / Hype Igoe. The magazine is clean and tight, with a reasonably bright front cover featuring a colorful boxing scene by illustrator Allan Thomas.
