Translated by Raymond from the Italian Original, "Gli avori in occidente", 1966, Milan. This edition 1970, Hamlyn, London. HARDCOVER BOOK AND JACKET AS NEW. Cameo Series. 159 pp. Small Octavo-5.5" x 7.75" tall (19cm). Soft gray cloth w/gilt titles, glossy red and gold jacket with illus. of carving in gold on front-quite beautiful. Frontis: 2-page map in blue and white illustrating Centres of Ivory carving Through the Ages. The seventy-one pieces illustrated in this book are European ivory carvings, and show the skill and sensitivity of ivory carvers throughout the ages. The finest period of Western ivory carving was from Early Christian times to the Middle Ages. We see here illustrated such carvings as the 5,000 year old knife found at Djebel-el-Arak, a cretan snake goddess, a Barbarian hunting horn. Each piece has descriptive and informative text accompanying it. This book is an exquisite work of art. 1970, Hamlyn Publishing Group.
