About This Item

Excellent. Paignton, John (John S, Barrington, English 1920-1991). JAMES BALDWIN #1. One of a group of 10 photographs of James Baldwin, one of which was used as the Dust Jacket image for the English edition of "The Furious Passage of James Baldwin" by Fern Marja, published in 1968. Gelatin Silver print, c.9 1/8 x 6 3/4 inches, 232x171 mm. Each print with a number in ink, on verso, this being #1. "John Paignton was the pseudonym of John S. Barrington. Barrington is better known for his photographs of physique models published during the 1950s and 60s. After the war, he managed to get some of his earlier photos into physique magazines of the time and also started advertising at magazine kiosks in London. That's how he met Neville Woodbury, an artist and collector. Woodbury would later start an imprint that published a handful of books. In exchange for photography lessons and models supplied by Barrington he produced both Out of Sickness (with Barrington's original cover art signed 'J.S.B.') published under the Paignton moniker, and Art and Anatomy published under Barrington's actual name." (HomoFabula Blog, April 19, 2019).
