First edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and equipped with a preliminary 33 page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. BAL records the edition consisted of 1558 copies. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1923 A near fine set of the 1st Oxford edition of Jane Austen's Novels, in the large paper version - limited to 1,000 sets of which 950 were for sale. The set consists of 5 volumes (Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are in one volume) with detailed notes, additional information and numerous illustrations. This set has been recently rebound by Elizabeth Howard - with pale blue calf spines (with title labels) and corners and matching marbled boards. New endpapers. Page edges to side and base untrimmed. Each volume has a colour frontispiece: in the case of Mansfield Park, this has an additional flap to give 2 different views of the same scene; and in Vol V there is a colour frontispiece for both books. A weekly collection of stories, a mixture of fiction and nonfiction along with social issues of the time. While Dickens was the editor and he did serialize a few of his stories through this magazine, it have several "unnamed" contributors. An American edition was published but not well received as it pertained to the English way of life not American. Complete London editions are scarce. A complete set bound in 3/4 contemporary red morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, all edges marbled., raised bands gilt, title within one compartment gilt. All hinges and joints are fine and tight, internally clean and bright without foxing. Some rubbing or darkening to bindings. From the library Joseph Greene with his armorial bookplate. A very nice set containing six of the nine extra Christmas numbers.

My Early Life sold very well at the time and has seen a great many editions since, many of them collectible in their own right, but of course a premium attaches to first editions. The challenge for collectors is that the plum colored binding of this edition proved especially susceptible to fading, soiling, and wear; nearly all copies are considerably spine faded. Hence this finely bound example. We commissioned the binding in full dark plum morocco, deferential to the original binding color. The binding features hubbed spine with gilt-tooled and decoratively framed raised bands, gilt lion rampant in the unprinted compartments, and twin brown spine labels.
