New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. First Edition. Fine/Very Good+. First edition, first printing with five line colophon with "Bound by H. Wolff, New York." [viii], 119, [1] pp. Publisher's red cloth with gilt spine lettering, yellow topstain. A Fine copy in correct dust jacket with publisher's price of $3.95 intact and no ISBN on the rear panel, easily Very Good+ with chipped head and tail, faint crease and a few small stains to spine panel, two small pieces of tape reinforcement to verso.
The author's first book for children. This edition preceded the better-known British edition by a full six years, and features color illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert, different from that edition, as well as a subtitle that was later dropped.
