1865 1ed Social Life of Chinese CHINA Opium Drinking Games Missionary DoolittleJustus Doolittle was an American missionary to China who is most famous for his book 'Social Life of the Chinese', a valuable work focused on Chinese life and social customs. According to J.L. Scott, "Doolittle exhaustively explored practices and events in Fuzhou, Fujian, where he was a missionary for 14 years. Few aspects of everyday life escaped his attention. Doolittle is especially strong when describing domestic religious practices and public holidays and ceremonies."Doolittle was also focused on curing the problem of opium addiction with Jesus. Doolittle himself explained,"The vice of opium smoking has long since become a giant obstacle to the welfare and the prosperity of this people. The consumption of opium is rapidly on the increase in this city as well as in other parts of the empire, and its ravages are becoming more awful. The nation is becoming poorer and poorer." (Baumler, p.49)In addition to opium addiction,…

1794 History of INDIA Asia MAPS Egypt Hindustan Robertson Scottish EnlightenmentWilliam Robertson was a notable 18th-century Scottish historian, and, according to Humphreys, 'made significant contributions to the writing of Scottish history and the history of Spain and Spanish America.' While Robertson was most known for his histories of America and Great Britain, he also published an historical account of India.
In this work, 'An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge of India', Robertson explored the commercial and cultural connections India had with the West through the end of the 15th-century. According to Stewart Brown, this work
"represents one of the more significant achievements of the late Scottish Enlightenment."
This fine work features 2 enormous, folding maps of India.

Description:
1862 Japanese Woodblock Print Shaka Hasso Snake Demon Samurai Color IllustratedA rare, 19th-century Japanese woodblock print of 'Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko." "Shaka Hassou Yamato Bunko" is a biography of Buddha written by Mantei Oga and illustrated by Ichiyousai Toyokuni. Buddhism originated in Northern India, or present-day Nepal where the historical Buddha (Prince Siddhartha, Gautama Buddha), was born and lived. When Buddhism arrived in Japan, Siddhartha became known in Japan as Shaka or Shakamuni. Stories of Shaka's life were commonly told through selecting eight events to represent his life. This 'Shaka Hassou,' was aimed at the general populace, using the "eight phases" as a device to teach the important points of Shaka's life as well as a means of entertainment.
This rare 1862 edition is written in the typical handwritten column format with illustrations of snakes, battles, samurai, courtesans, demons, and more!

"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."Scars and bruises may fade, but we must remember what caused them. The purpose of《Wounds of Hong Kong》is to record police brutality. All 24 interviewees have sacrificed in their own ways during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. Among the thousands wounded, they are only a few. I would like to sincerely thank them for sharing their experience, insights, and feelings to me. I remember at the beginning of the resistance outbreak in June of 2019. As a photographer/journalist, I felt unsure. Protesters all covered their faces with masks, so how could I tell their stories? How can I search their ethos beneath the masks? However, my worry was quickly swept away as I realized that they weren't the only ones…

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…
