New York: Thomas Yoseloff, 1962. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Eight color plates, 239 figures, one map, and four tables, one folding. First U.S. edition. First fully documented one-volume work on the crafts of Japan, with separate sections on ceramics, metalwork, lacquer, netsuke carving, leatherwork, and basketry. Includes an historical introduction concerning technological and stylistic developments, a record of the names and genealogies of craftsmen, an explanation of the Japanese system of dating, discussion on the sources of iconography and motifs, and an extensive bibliography. Salmon cloth binding, with gilt and black titles. The dust jacket is a bit rubbed, with a light dampstain to the bottom of rear panel and some unnecessary tape reinforcement on the verso of the spine; otherwise very good.

DJ shows scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner wear/creases/small tears. Orange cloth boards underneath are clean and bright with only minor edge and corner bumps. The internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings, no handwriting, no remainder marks. There is some light toning to the page edges and the pastedown and end pages also show toning from reacting to the dust jacket.
