About This Item

Lucien Vogel / Conde Nast, Paris, 1921; First Edition; 7 1/2" x 9 3/4". Color pochoir print by Ebel of a Camille Roger design for a stylish lady’s hat. From La Gazette Du Bon Ton, Lucien Vogel’s legendary fashion journal issued between November 1912 and December 1925, but for a hiatus during The First World War between the Summer of 1915 and January 1920. The Gazette was steadfastly uncompromising both in its print quality and choice of artists and illustrators, who formed a veritable Who’s Who of the Art Deco period, with George Barbier, Pierre Brissaud, Andre Marty, Charles Martin, Edouardo Garcia Benito, Erté, Thayaht, Georges Lepape, Pierre Mourgue, and Robert Bonfils listed among them. Likewise, its articles were authored by the leading Parisian writers, academics, and critics of the day, and its opinions highly influential. Vogel signed exclusive contracts to feature the lines of Paris’s leading couture houses in the pages of the Gazette, and the magazine was looked upon by fashion conscious the world over as the epitome of style and good taste. It was printed in limited edition for subscribers only, on heavy handmade paper, and each issue was distinguished for its stylish full-page fashion plates produced using the costly pochoir, or stencil, technique of hand coloring. Fine. Plate #35 from Gazette No. 5, 1921. Not a reproduction. A striking Art Deco print.
