First line

Conventional wisdom in governance did not develop out of credible theory, but from trial and error, tradition-blessed familiarity, and the dominance of either managers or management mentality.

From the jacket flap

John Carver, leading expert in the field of board leadership, has gathered together in one comprehensive volume a compilation of his most noteworthy articles and essays. In this invaluable book-it includes original essays, the best of the Board Leadership newsletter, and articles from myriad publications-- Carver shows how boards can excel within their own organizations by adopting his groundbreaking Policy Governance model.
This handy guide to the Policy Governance model presents information in a highly accessible format. With more than one hundred and fifteen articles on the topic, John Carver on Board Leadership offers a solid base for understanding and implementing this proven model for board success. This comprehensive resource covers a wealth of critical topics such as achieving meaningful diversity in the boardroom, protecting board integrity, handling staff complaints, evaluating the mission statement, making informed fiscal policy, owning the board agenda, evaluating the CEO, and knowing when (and when not) to form committees. Designed as a hands-on guide, this book also includes an innovative Frequently Asked Questions navigation tool that is helpful for finding specific answers to targeted questions.
Written for board members, executives, and consultants across the nonprofit, corporate, and government sectors, John Carver on Board Leadership provides one-stop shopping for effective board management for boards no matter what their size or their mission.
