First Edition, first printing (i.e. with no title page). Galsworthy had met Conrad in early 1893, when a passenger on board the "Torrens" -- of which ship Conrad was then first mate. This was actually written as a review of Galsworthy's Forsyte novel A MAN OF PROPERTY; the review had appeared in the 31 March 1906 issue of Outlook magazine. Conrad later had to apologize to his friend Galsworthy when this was inadvertently omitted from NOTES ON LIFE & LETTERS (it was collected in the posthumous LAST ESSAYS instead). As with the companion piece THE DOVER PATROL, Conrad disliked the initial printing because it did not have a title page (other than the front wrapper), and asked that it immediately be reprinted to include one. "Copies from the second printing of both pamphlets are much more common than copies from the first printings" [Cagle]. (It is often stated, but not by Cagle, that only 75 copies were printed; if this is true, it would apply only to the first printing, as the second is not that scarce.) This is a near-fine copy (no wear, but some fading of the edges of the pale turquoise wrapper -- as always). Cagle A57b.
