Decorative front matt cardboard cover is attached to the rear board with a red spine that supports the folding pages. Front board has slight wear along all edges and bumping to the front corners, wear along the spine edge front and rear, and rear board has slight wear to the corners and slight rubbing. All the pop-ups are colorful, vibrant, and functional with no tears or rips but number 7 is bent at the bottom and will not stand up and number 8 has a crease along the top (see photos) but also will not stand up but reason is not apparent. Light age tanning throughout at the bottom of each folded page but no tearing or damage along the fan-fold seams. The actual pages are clean with no tears, chips, creases, or previous owner marks. Unpaginated but approximately 10 pages or five pop up pages.
The Jolly Jump-Up stories first appeared in 1939 and continued well into the 1950's with Geraldyne Clyne as the illustrator. The series were a statement about what the United States was experiencing – from the dust bowl to World War II, the purchase of a new home to going on vacation, the stories traced the idyllic "American Family". The Pop Up Number Book is one of the more difficult tittles to find.
Pop-ups - defined as 3-dimensional paper illustrations designed to self-erect with the turning of a page – became firmly established in the twentieth century when the term "pop – up" first appears in 1930 (Blue Ribbon Publishers). By insinuating dynamic action into the reading process, they offered a heightened animated experience that echoed the parallel development of motion pictures and eventually, television.
