Description

London: Grant Richards, 1899. First Edition. Decorated & gilt-stamped cloth. Very good. Several linecut illustrations. 8vo, brown gilt-stamped cloth (gilt image of the Maysya Avatar of Vishnu emerging from a fish or whale), several B&W illustrations, 182 pages. Classic study of the Indian myths that echo or underlie the biblical folktale of Jonah being swalled by a whale and his reemergence. Several excellent and clean illustrations. Cloth is slightly rubbed with a 1" rippling to front cover; corners also slightly rubbed and bumped. Two lines in ink in Greek on front pastedown (dtd "1938"). Small inoffensive--though torn--booksellers label (Irish) affixed to lower margin of front pastedown. Upper corner of hinge (3/8") slightly torn.
