1973. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Josephine Clardy Fox. El Paso history. Near Fine Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Inscribed by author on 1/2 title page. B&W photos. Book designed by Carl Hertzog. A slip of paper in the book (see photo) proves the authenticity of the signature/inscription--it tells about a autograph party for the book. Other papers in the book are a calling card for Mrs. Josephine Clardy [Mrs. Eugene Fox) Fox and Mrs Allie Davis Clardy; newspaper articles about the book, author, and the book signing; and the business card of the owner of the shop where the book was sold and autographed. About the book: Josephine Marsalis Clardy was born in 1881 in Missouri, and moved to the small frontier town of El Paso at the age of one year. She spent the remainder of her life there, married a railroad executive and was widowed about eighteen years later. From her home on Montana Street, the widow Josephine Clardy Fox became a legend until her death in 1970. Throughout these years, she remained a distinctly private person, one whose wealth increased as El Paso grew, one who bequeathed the University of Texas as El Paso over three million dollars. The real story behind her legendary life and bygone days in El Paso have been carefully researched and interestingly narrated by Ruby Burns. The book is designed by Carl Hertzog.
