Description:
London: Hamish Hamilton,, 1954. First edition, first impression, of the only novel by Richard Haydn (1905-1985), the comedy actor who voiced the Caterpillar in Disney's Alice in Wonderland and played Max in the film adaptation of The Sound of Music. Haydn devised the character of Edwin Carp, a poet and expert on fish, as a sketch show character. As noted by the dust jacket blurb, "he is a creation in the grand tradition of English deadpan comedy". Octavo. Original yellow boards, spine lettered in black, front cover with vignette in black. With dust jacket. Illustrated by Ronald Searle. Foxing to top edge, light foxing to endpapers, a near-fine copy. Dust jacket slightly toned and spotted with slight wear to extremities and minor closed tears, a very good example.
