Second Edition; Later Printing. Hardcover. Later printing (eighteenth thousand). Dark green blindstamped cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine. Brown coated endpapers. X, 519pp, + 32pp list of publisher’s titles dated February, 1888 plus [1]pp pink leaf printed on recto only with list of additional Darwin titles inserted between pp.6-7 of publisher’s ads. Engraved vignettes throughout text. Includes Darwin’s two-page preface dated June, 1845 and his one-page post-script dated Feb. 1st, 1860. Handsome photogravure and engraved owner bookplate on front pastedown of F. E. Dinshaw featuring portrait of woman in sari surrounded by acanthus leaf roundel. Dinshaw was a prominent Mumbai businessman in pre-partition India. Separate printed label below bookplate (Dar. 8523). Charles Darwin’s account of his 1831-1836 travels aboard (and off) the H. M. S. Beagle around South America, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, including his revolutionary ruminations about natural selection. The book was first published in 1839 and has had various titles in its long publishing life; now most commonly referred to as “The Voyage of the Beagle”. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
