London, printed by Vaughan Griffiths, for T. N. Longman, No. 39, Paternoster-Row, 1796. Three parts and appendix in one volume, 4to. Near contemporary half-calf over marbled boards, ornamented in blind, spine with gilt-stamped lettering-piece; pp. xvii, [3], 176; 138; 181,[1]; 9, [1]; rebacked, preserving the original back-strip, light wear to extremities; occasional spotting, otherwise good. Second edition, identical with the first of 1795. 'The journey was made by way of Belgium, Tyrol, Venice, Alexandria, Aleppo, Diyarbakir, Mosul, Baghdad, Bushehr, Bombay, and Goa, all of which places and others are described in the work. Campbell was shipwrecked in the Indian Ocean, and imprisoned by Haider Ali of Mysore, but subsequently released. The book enjoyed much popularity. A new edition appeared in 1796, and an abridged version was published in the same year as Narrative of Adventures, and a sixth edition was reached in 1808. The third part of the travels, relating to the shipwreck and imprisonment of the writer, was published as a chapbook, Shipwreck and Captivity of D. C.' (ODNB). ESTC N47266; Wilson 36; Cox I, 306.

Campbell, who formerly commanded a regiment of cavalry in the Service of the Nabob of the Carnatic (in India). His travels took him through Germany to Venice in part one; Alexandria, Aleppo to Mosul in part two, then to Baghdad, Basra, Bombay, shipwreck and capture by Hyder Ali, Candapore, Travanare, Madras and Bengal. .
