JUS POPULI. OR, A DISCOURSE WHEREIN CLEAR SATISFACTION IS GIVEN, AS WELL CONCERNING THE RIGHT OF SUBJECTS, AS THE RIGHT OF PRINCES.
SHEWING HOW BOTH ARE CONSISTENT, AND WHERE THEY BORDER ONE UPON THE OTHER. AS ALSO, WHAT THERE IS DIVINE, AND WHAT THERE IS HUMANE IN BOTH: AND WHETHER IS OF MORE VALUE AND EXTENT.
Parker, HenryPublished by Authority, London, 1644. Printed for Robert Bostock, dwelling in Pauls
Church-yard at the Signe of the Kings Head
Small quarto, pp. 68. Later full mottled calf in period style, light dust-staining to first leaf, last leaf more heavily so, else very good. Wing P403.
A political theorist and pamphleteer during the 1640s, Henry Parker was the most influential defender of the Parliamentary case during the Civil Wars and the early years of the Long Parliament. His theories of popular sovereignty, political representation, and Parliamentary absolutism constitute an original and innovative contribution to early modern political philosophy. This work, which directly addresses the concept of "popular sovereignty" in relationto divine sovereignty, is quite rare – not appearing in auctions or catalogues in many years, and only a handful of physical copies appearing in WorldCat.
