This is volume 1 only. An ex library hardback in a good mylar covered dust jacket. The text and illustrations are fine and the binding is holding well. Indexed. Really a very clean and bright copy...I only wish I had the other two volumes. This one has biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principle Chiefs. 442 pages. The usual library stamps are present. (R011)

Wonderfully illustrated with 123 full page colour plates and maps. Covers rubbed, corners bumped, 2 small holes in cloth at spine hinges ( see scans), small red discoloration to tail piece, further stain to spine. A Good Copy with bright crisp internals and plates.

Also known to his tribe as The Sacred Pigeon-hawk Which Comes Walking, Little Crow was a noble Sioux chief of the Kaposia band, which resided on the east bank of the Mississippi. He fought for the British in the War of 1812 and traveled to Washington in 1824 as the leader of a Sioux delegation. His grandson, the renowned chief Little Crow, was a key leader in the Great Sioux Uprising of 1862 in Minnesota. The portrait plates are based on paintings by the artist Charles Bird King, who was employed by the War Department to paint the Indian delegates visiting Washington D.C., forming the basis of the War Department's Indian Gallery. Most of King's original paintings were subsequently destroyed in a fire at the Smithsonian, and their appearance in McKenney and Hall's magnificent work is thus our only record of the likenesses of many of the most prominent Indian leaders of the nineteenth century. Numbered among King's sitters were Sequoyah, Red Jacket, Major Ridge, Cornplanter, and Osceola. Ongpatonga or Big Elk (c. 1765- 1846) was the chief of the Omahas from 1800 until his death in 1846. He was a celebrated orator and made two visits to Washington: 1821 and 1837. During his lifetime, his tribe was not required to move and was able to maintain fairly calm relations with the Americans.
